Pacmed Glance Capacity Module: Better control of ICU occupancy with real-time AI predictions on clinical data

Amsterdam, August 14, 2025 – Following a successful pilot at OLVG, Pacmed today introduces a new AI module specifically designed for ICU capacity planning. The module predicts ICU care demand per shift for the next 3–5 days. This forecast is based on:

  • Predicted ICU discharge dates using real-time patient data
  • Scheduled surgeries (and expected ICU duration for those procedures)
  • Acute admissions based on historical patterns

Using these predictions, the tool displays the required number of ICU nurses alongside the existing roster, making under- or overcapacity visible early. This enables planners and team leaders to proactively adjust before shortages or overstaffing occur.

Beyond the ICU

The Glance capacity module is not limited to the ICU. The underlying technology is being developed for other hospital departments and the acute care chain.

Why this module is needed now

Hospitals increasingly struggle to ensure the right staffing at the right time. They face strong fluctuations in patient numbers and varying care intensity. Meanwhile, workforce planning is labor-intensive, involving extensive manual coordination. This leads to higher workload, stress from frequent ad-hoc changes, and unnecessary costs in cases of overcapacity. Pacmed Glance addresses these challenges through its new capacity module, helping ICU planners and team leaders make practical decisions for common scenarios such as:

  • Is the current roster sufficient for expected workload?
  • Should a sick nurse be replaced?
  • Is extra staff needed for high anticipated admissions?
  • Can staff be released during low demand?

All decisions are supported from a single dashboard, based on the most up-to-date clinical and operational data.

What makes Glance different from existing solutions

While many planning tools rely mainly on historical trends and seasonal patterns, Pacmed Glance combines this information with real-time predictions based on individual clinical patient data. This combination enables significantly more accurate estimates of ICU care demand and staffing needs. The module moves from general estimates to proactive, data-driven capacity decisions at the patient level.

Successfully tested at OLVG

The Glance capacity module is already operational at OLVG and has been successfully tested in daily practice. Thanks to the direct translation of clinical data into actionable staffing insights, ICU teams experience greater control over planning and fewer ad-hoc stress moments. Early results show that timely adjustments lead to better staff utilization and a more stable work environment. A follow-up post will share OLVG’s first results and an interview with the ICU team leader about Glance’s impact on the workplace.

More new modules coming, beyond the ICU

Our first module, Glance Discharge, required years of careful development to ensure responsible deployment in clinical practice. Glance Capacity was realized in just a few months thanks to the Pacmed Cortex platform: a scalable infrastructure already rolled out in our partner hospitals. This platform enables faster and responsible development, implementation, and deployment of new AI models. Building on this technological foundation, we are now working on several new Glance modules targeting different parts of the acute care chain, making AI support increasingly available across the hospital.
